KOTA KINABALU, July 2 — The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) will reply to Barisan Nasional (BN) within 30 days for its lack of faith in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's leadership and the possibility of ditching the ruling coalition after August.
The party said in a statement yesterday that it received the show-cause letter dated June 30 from BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor demanding an explanation for its proposed vote of no confidence against Abdullah, a statement that there is no guarantee SAPP will still be in the BN after August and its loss of confidence in the prime minister.
"SAPP will respond to the show cause letter within the 30 days," the party said. SAPP had announced on June 18 that it had lost faith in the prime minister and its two members of parliament would move or support a no-confidence motion when Parliament was due to reconvene June 23.
The issue became anti-climatic when both lawmakers did not show up due to claims of threats against their lives. A day after SAPP's move, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) said it was investigating a court witness claim that party president Datuk Yong Teck Lee had committed financial misconduct when he was Sabah chief minister in 1996.
SAPP noted in its latest statement that the ACA has yet to call Yong for a statement in the graft case involving a state-owned company. Yong claimed he has answered questions about the matter and hinted the investigations was linked to the party's stand against Abdullah who has been facing almost daily calls to quit after the BN's worst electoral defeat in the March elections where it lost its traditional two-thirds majority.
